Disposal of Confidential waste.

The disposal of Confidential Waste is an important part of College Security and protects our Staff and Students from unauthorised data disclosure.  The College has invested in a system to ensure all paper waste that is deemed ‘Confidential’ can be disposed of safely.  Each Estates Office has a supply of white and red sacks available on request and can collect sealed bags for transfer to a separate secure bin.   Estates will then arrange for the bin to be emptied when full.  All staff are to follow the procedure detailed below to dispose of Confidential waste.

Confidential waste is defined as any personal information that can be used to identify individuals, including their name, address, contact numbers or any sensitive data.

Staff must follow the procedure detailed below:

  1.  Decide what paper waste constitutes ‘Confidential data’ and separate from other non-confidential waste.
  2. Place all Confidential paper waste into the white and red sacks.  Ensure the sacks do not contain any plastic, for example poly-pockets or binders.   Ensure the sack is man-portable and seal the bag with a cable-tie to ensure no data can be seen once the sack leaves your room.  If you require a cable tie please request one via the Help Desk.
  3. Once the bag is ready for collection, inform your site Estates Office by raising a ticket on the Help Desk.  The sealed bag will be collected by Estates and transferred to a secure disposal bin.
  4. Any other waste can be placed in the normal waste disposal for recycling.

Any questions or queries regarding Confidential Waste can be directed to the Facilities Coordinator or Estates Manager.
